Recalls : Google provided me with about
119,000,000 results in doing a search on recall news. When I look for
results over the past 24 hours, the results reduce down to about 2,030,000.
A product recall is a request to return to the manufacturer a specified
amount of a product. The recall is an effort to limit liability and to improve
or avoid damage to publicity. Recalls are costly to a company because
they often entail replacing the recalled product or paying for damage caused by
use, although possibly less costly than consequential costs caused by damage to
brand name and reduced trust in the manufacturer.
Recalls are due to quality failing in some way. For each of the
manufacturers of a recall, I have to wonder what is the cost of a recall versus
the cost and effectiveness of their current quality program.
